Is there anything wrong in the world of science? Old Thu Feb 8, 2007 10:41:37 PM #33821 Perm Link
Between NASA's embarrassment with an astronaut who tried to abduct her rival, quite possibly with violent intentions, and the father of gene therapy who was recently convicted for being a child molester, you would think that "there is something rotten in the kingdom of science"...

Although those people are merely human, with their bright and dark sides, don't you think that men and women who belong to the highlights of science and technology should at least try to behave decently and set an example for everyone else out there?

They need to redo psych profiles every once in awhile.

You say that people are messed up, and you are right. Scientists are people too after all. But shouldn't they show a better example and take their position as scientists with a bit more responsibility?

Everyone has the same amount of responsibility to "set a good example".

I'm not really sure I understand this thread. Because they are scientists or because they are working for a scientific industry they are suddenly supposed to be put on a moral pedestal and the public is supposed to look to them for daily guidance? I could see that assertion working for a member of the clergy, but I feel it's a bit stretched to say that being a scientist suddenly puts an individual at the forefront of morality. And that due to this, they should work hard to "set a good example" for those of us who are not scientists and cannot discern what is decent or moral on our own.

Agreed. But don't you think that people in science, who are supposed to have an intellect above average, should be more aware of the impact their behaviour may have on the mind of lay people?

That's like saying the politicians should do the same. Everyone has their own personal beliefs and agenda.

Indeed, politicians should do the same, and so should everyone in the spotlights of the general public. I was mainly concerned with scientists, are they are supposed to have an intelligence above average. As we all know, this isn't the case for politicians. Wink

Just because someone is Intelligent doesn't mean they can't be a cold blooded killer, Clarice.

Yes, there is something wrong in the world of science. It's called stupidity. Aside from driving in diapers and being a child molester, there is something wrong in that they (scientist) have been unable to over come the ignorance of those who believe that Global Warming is a farce. They need to break it down to a simpleton level for those who actually think that Global Warming means that the entire world is just simply getting hotter and how can that be with the snow going on in the midwest?

Excellent quote! Thank you very much Dr. Lecter. Wink

I am aware that some people use their intelligence for rather dubious purposes, but I simply wanted to highlight that scientists are usually highly thought of by the general public and should therefore set an example.

To the best of my knowledge, scientists are indeed warning us of a climate change due to human activities. The ignorant people you are referring to aren't scientist.

P.S.: Nice to see you here, Melizzy. Smile
