PDF Becomes ISO Standard

This is good news for everyone. PDF is now a true open standard. ISO 32000-1 is the document standard. Many tools currently work with PDF.

PDF, a digital form used to represent electronic documents, allows users to exchange and view the documents easily and reliably, independent of the environments in which they are created, viewed and printed, while preserving their content and visual appearance.

ISO: Please Stop Bashing Us!

Even though ISO has allowed itself to be bought by Microsoft, they are calling for a cease fire from the bashing. Personal attacks aren't warranted unless the attack is truthful. ISO was bought by Microsoft and now we've got two document standards that Microsoft won't follow anyway.

We call on all organisations and individuals involved in SC 34 standardisation to support this view, and to refrain from initiating or engaging in any such personal attacks."

OpenDocument Now ISO Standard

OpenDocument is now a real standard. ISO/IEC 26300:2006.

ISO/IEC 26300:2006 defines an XML schema for office applications and its semantics. The schema is suitable for office documents, including text documents, spreadsheets, charts and graphical documents like drawings or presentations, but is not restricted to these kinds of documents. ISO/IEC 26300:2006 provides for high-level information suitable for editing documents. It defines suitable XML structures for office documents and is friendly to transformations using XSLT or similar XML-based tools. ISO/IEC 26300:2006 first provides an introduction to the OpenDocument format and explains the structure of documents that conform to the OpenDocument specification. It describes the meta information that can be contained in such documents, and their text and paragraph content. Text Fields and text indices are described.
