»Apple to position iPhone/iPod Touch as gaming machine. No one cares.

Quote

Speaking exclusively to MCV, the company confessed that its new marketing campaign encourages consumers to buy iPod purely “to play our games” – and even marked the device out as a real threat to Nintendo and Sony’s handheld efforts.

Greg Joswiak, head of iPod and iPhone marketing told us: “It’s not just the screens that are superior to DS – it’s the graphics capability, the computing power and the App Store distribution model.

“I had an analyst tell me in September – and he was right – that the DS is the past of gaming devices, and iPod Touch is the future of gaming devices. It certainly has our competitors scrambling in what they’re going to do in reaction to this. This product is capable of so much more, and there’s a tremendous synergy we have with the iPod Touch and game developers.”

Linky.

Spoken like someone who truly has no grasp over the gaming industry. Seriously, there are so many hilarious, out-of-touch-with-reality statements in both quotes above that it will be nothing short of EPIC when they fail at it. I give them a year before they give up on the idea, if not less. At the very least, however, it may put a cap on Apple's current elitist attitude over every market they compete in.

Portable gaming devices are built from the ground up to be gaming devices.

You don't just throw an application on an interface that isn't conducive to fast action and expect the industry to say, "Wow! Screw the dominant player." Apple is basically worried that the iPod is basically relegated to minimal sales with their iPhone out on the market. If you can't get AT&T, most new phones have MP3 players built-in, why buy an iPod alone anymore? That's what they are worried about.

If they were smart, they would focus only on the Nano from this point on. The market for bigger iPods have dried up, mostly thanks to the iPhone.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!

I've also heard it called a hail mary pass to try and salvage future iPhone sales now that there is a legitimate iPhone killer on the market.

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

iPhone killer is a bad term.

The Storm (I have it) targets a slightly different, more mature, market. I'll have my reaction to the device soon.

The storm seems to be more business oriented, As with all other blackBerrys. The iPhone however is more or less targeted on People who want to have the web and have fun with it, as well as pay an arm and a leg for data.

I disagree. Part of the success of the iPhone was that it was stealing away smart phone owners (for whatever reason). The Storm should, quite honestly, put an end to that; being a dedicated smart phone rather than a circumstantial smart phone.

I have the iPhone, Do not pay an arm and a leg for unlimited data. Anyway, for them to advertise it as a gaming machine is pointless... I just saw the new iTouch commercial where it rolls through all the games and how they are played. But to be honest, the games and the way you play them just aren't fun. The only games I play are casino games, like Blackjack and Texas Hold 'em, pass the time fast. Only reason I bought it was so I can carry less crap when I go out, and have the web a my finger tips. And to be honest I use the web a lot, I go to a lot of NY Ranger games, and on the train there we like to find out whose scratched, whose in, and the lines for the night. And when we get into statistic arguments, Google comes in handy on the train. But yeah, I don't see how they can advertise them as a "gaming machine".
