You wouldn't realize it while playing with most of the jerks that play Halo 2, but 64% of the nation's 117 million online gamers are actually women, according to Nielsen Entertainment's third annual Active Gamer Benchmark Study, released this morning. The study's announcement release doesn't break down what games they're playing, though we expect sites like pogo.com, which feature a multitude of Flash-based, more simplistic games, are rather high on the list. Even more surprising is how many older gamers are playing. While the teenage market dominates in numbers, the study says more than 15 million gamers, about 8%, are actually at least 45 years old.

That sounds kind of offensive...

I take it the other way. Those are 'pick up and play' games. I think it is worse that most me play something more involved such as WoW that really takes up your life.

It just sounds like they're saying "well, the majority of games may be female, but they probably only play the simple games" which is...extreme, I know. But given that everyone assumes women only play gamed like The Sims and whenever I say I'm a female gamer I pretty much have to fight people about it because they're convinced I'm a guy (to be fair, everyone seems to think I'm a guy online, gamer or not), so I'm pretty quick to jump to conclusions.

I'm not really offended by it at all, I just thought the wording could be a bit better so it doesn't sound like they're trying to insult anyone (it sounds like an intentional jab at it, seriously)

I play WoW, but it doesn't really control my life at all XD I just think it's not the game for people with addictive personalities.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

Wish someone told me that a year ago... before i lost my life =P

Yeah, i know a lot of married couples and women that play WoW, and it seems perfectly normal to me after getting to know the people. It is wierd seeming at first playing with a coupld old enough to be my parents, but once you put yourself in their shoes its not odd at all.

And WoW did control my life, but after stopping and picking it back up again, i just play it alot, no addiction or anything, just boredom with my free time

You would never know this playing on Xbox Live. On Live its 11-16 year old whiney punks talking trash the whole game. And when you kick their asses, they report you for cheating.

It really doesn't bother me that 68% of gamers are girls. I mean they are usually better players than me. I have been beaten a many of times on my psp online game by girls because they are good.

My friend Dicer-

Death has a thousand different Faces. Evil only has one.

Even some of the next gens can't beat the originals. (N64, snes, nintendo.)

it's pretty much the same as playing against a guy. Often times you don't even know you're playing against a girl because one naturally assumes all gamers are male. Or they choose male avatars in games to avoid being harassed (my character is male in WoW. Although that's partially because I like the male tauren's design more)

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

Why would the genre of the game have anything to do with a certain gender enjoying it? I think that by you saying that, you are admiting to being a bigot! Okay, maybe not that far, but I think gender profiling is stupid... On the other hand though, I can understand people being surprised by this, because you see far more men at game stores than you do women... They must all buy off of amazon...

A lot of people assume that, if you're female in a gaming store, you're buying a gift for your boyfriend or brother or something. And the staff will very often talk down to you because you're female and obviously don't know anything. Or they'll flirt which is also uncomfortable in some instances. It is just easier to purchase over the internet and avoid all the drama that's associated with being female in a gaming store.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

I went to Lamestop the other day, and they had a really pretty girl working behind the counter.. I thought she must have been one of these homely fellas girlfriend, until she rang me up.

Anyways, I think that if female gamers made themselves heard, than there would be more sensitive games, which I would really like, because I am tired of the "I'm so macho lets go shoot everything" game play behind nearly every game out these days...

More sensitive games? They have The Sims you know?

The girl played games, because she was talking about the games to me and the other employees.

And no, the Sims is not "Sensitive", it's just not violent. I mean games that stir up emotions and have love and revenge and real human traits other than "Hey, I found a gun, lets go blow shit up".
