Like I said in the other thread, it takes a very special individual to ignore the years of physical and sexual abuse and just say "He killed because of GTA!". You'll notice the defending attourney didn't even use that as a defense because he said it "had no merit".

The game trained him ''how to point and shoot a gun in a fashion making him an extraordinarily effective killer without teaching him any of the constraints or responsibilities needed to inhibit such a killing capacity,'' according to the suit.

OK, so learing to use the analog stick and press a button TRAINS YOU TO USE A GUN?!?
and GTA imposes pleanty of constaints, you get shot at, Cops will take you to kail / kill you... etc

I've played my fair share of GTA and Im sure I would be a very ineffective killing machine, maybe I need to play more.

There shouldn't be any lawsuit at all... who they should sue is who gave him the game.

But they're dead and abused the hell out of the kid, which is why the family is taking take-two to court, to make it look like the Judge, every single APA member in this country, and Dr. Phil are wrong about severe physical and sexual abuse but that Jack Thompson and Dr. Walsh are correct about Video Games. Also, they want it to look like it wasn't the Dad and Mom's fault the kid killed them. But yeah, you burn someone with a welding rod for not having sex with your wife, you're kind of asking for it.

"It's the violent video games like GTA that cause people to kill people, not the people. If it weren't for the games, no one would be dead. We should all blame video games for our violent actions, because we are not in control, the games are, just like that mind-warping music that has polluted today's youth." And we should pass on our responsibility to everything but ourselves.

You got that right. That's the basic principle of parents today.

In my opinion, the arguement would only have validity is if there were no/rare killings prior to the release of violent video games (and I don't think anything before Genesis-SNES era counts, IF even that era counts). But that's quite obviously not the case. People have killed people since the dawn of time, and children are far from innocent in the matter (not even considering that 14 was fairly old centuries ago, so they'd already be exposed to killing anyway). There is no way of knowing if this kid wouldn't have killed if he hadn't played GTA (although I doubt it) and it's very radical of them to claim that GTA was the ONLY reason. Pardon but HELLO - the game has a giant M on the cover and explains it's only for people 17 and up. I don't see how a 14 year old could get it himself and if his parents got it for him, it's their own damn fault for not parenting and deciding if it was such a good game for their child to be playing. But it's most likely not the only cause, if it had any hand in the issue at all. Incidentally, whenever I played GTA, I never got the feeling I was learning to use a real gun. You don't even have to aim, just shoot and the autoaim feature will help you if you're in the right direction. It shows you no dynamics of the gun, you can't even feel it in your hand, how the hell can it teach you to use one? HEY, I know, lets go sue Nintendo over the Superscope. Because of it I now know how to kill =(

The article mentions copycat violence. However, I don't think you kill your own family in the game, so how is that copying, exactly? It's not as if he's running over prostitutes or such, things that you do in the game. In this case, it's like saying he's 'copying' countless other violent media, fiction and non-fiction alike, because they all involve death.

Frankly, I don't think it's GTA that's 'training' people to kill, I think it's this war. It's the desensitization that these kids go through every day. And, no, I'm not talking fiction here. I can't tell you how many times I've been unfazed by news reports of the daily death toll in this godforsaken war. If you see REAL death, REAL killing day in and day out, it becomes normal. And the commercials glorifying the army aren't helping. I have infinite respect for soldiers, I reckon they're in some ways victims of it too, but the message the footage and commercials send out is essentially 'killing=glory'. I know they're trying to convince people to join the cause, but the very basic message is what desensitized people.

BUT even that isn't the cause. There is no one cause. It's a cumulation. For one, everyone has a breaking point. Everyone. Although not everyone will kill (but most people will if they absolutely had to) when they break, everyone can break. You can only take so much before your ego shatters and your left with insanity. A chaos of unchecked thoughts. There's a strong desire to regulate them and to do that you have to correct what broke you and in such a state, murder is not considered wrong to you. And I imagine the abuse the kid went through was more than enough to drive him over the edge. That's a HUGE factor, it cannot be overlooked. Any idiot knows that suffering breeds desperation.

Video Game scapegoating is sick. It feeds the public's need to point the finger and say IT WAS YOU. It was your fault, not mine, so HA my conscious is clear! That's why you can sue gun manufacturers for making guns you killed someone with, sue McDonalds for providing the food you made yourself fat off of, you neighbor if you slip on wet pavement in their front lawn, products for not informing you that you should not intentionally put yourself into danger with their product (like using a lawnmower to trim hedges or grabbing the nasty end of a chainsaw with your bare hands). Blame blame blame, if it's not you then you'll have no reason to look inside yourself and find out the REAL reason you did what you did. It's always someone else, it's always someone bigger. It's always THE MAN trying to bring you down. Why do we attack corporations for problems we cause? Why do we feel the need to find a 'dark side' to sympathetic figures in our history (I've found, people are obsessed with finding some evil in public idols. Kind of like how they like to portray sweet innocent girls as evil and malicious in cartoons, and evil behind a pretty face. It's essentially a metaphor for what people do it real life)? Why is it so important that we dehumanize others? I guess we must know who are enemy is. If we don't know our enemy, we don't know ourselves. Introspection is the new boogeyman and we'll try our hardest to keep it locked up in the closet.

This is why I usually stop halfway through my thoughts, otherwise I end up writing an essay XD many pardons and such.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

There are laws against restricting purchases of video games like that. It is against free speech. I agree with the second. The parents should be the sole people that decide if playing that type of game is good...

I also agree with your other points. This kid also got raped. I guess that doesn't count for anything.
