»Say Goodbye to (the rest of) CompUSA...

http://money.cnn.com/2007/12/07/technology/compusa.ap/

This comes as no surprise to those who ever worked for the company. Other than their decent Tech Services department (which a few of us here at ASE Labs were a part of...see the "Safe Mode" comic for some insight), CompUSA was being buried by the likes of Best Buy for years. I saw firsthand all of the stupid, ill-advised business decisions the company continuously made, and while I have some fond memories working with some really good guys there, I sure won't be sending any flowers to its funeral.

I can't say I'm surprised. Fortunately most of the friends I have from CompUSA are no longer there. As the System administrator stated there were MANY ill-advised business decisions and lack of a consistant business plan.

That shop in "Safe Mode" looks very familiar, I wonder where I've seen it. Hmmmmmm....

So, what is RudeMoody going to do for a job?

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

Actually. my CompUSA store closed back in late-May. I'm now the Assistant Manager of a Staples store. It pays about 10 grand more than CompUSA did, and it's a much better job as well...

I can honestly say i've only been to a compUSA once in my life, mostly because the nearest one to me is about a 45 minute drive away and theres a bestbuy 10 minutes away. Though i never even buy computer parts from bestbuy because they're such a damn ripoff. i looove geeksqauds prices they make me laugh everytime i go there 50$ to INSTALL a ram card. I wish i could make 50$ with 5 seconds worth of my time.

$50? I think it's more like $30...plus, remember there's the ACCOUNTABILITY FACTOR (what if you put RAM into a friends PC and broke something while doing so?) and the piece of mind people get when paying experienced people to work on their computer. Most people aren't computer wizards, you know.

That may be true but you have to admit the prices in bestbuy for just about any computer part are pretty jacked up. i saw a XFX geforce 8800GTX there for $540 and on newegg its $499 not including the rebate..so really only about $450 nearly $100 more then newegg? that seems like a rip to me.

newegg doesn't have to pay for a full staff, doesn't have to deal with theft and many other expenses including running and maintaining an entire retail store. overhead is much higher in a "brick and mortar" retail chain than some warehouse in kentucky or wherever.

you're right. they're more expensive. no biggie. tech-heads and people who want to can still order online. it's cost vs. convenience in a lot of ways. saving money isn't everyone's main concern.
