Favorite gay-themed movies? Old Tue Apr 24, 2007 5:01:47 PM #37308 Perm Link
As a lesbian, I'm always on the lookout for good movies with GLBTQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, queer/questioning) content. Usually I'm pretty disappointed by the lack of quality and selection, but every now and then I'll stumble upon a gem.

A couple of my favorites:

The Closet (French with subtitles). A straight man who is about to be fired tells his boss he is gay, knowing the boss will do the "PC" thing by not firing him. His newfound "gayness" has a remarkable affect on most of the women in his life, and a few of the men as well. If you don't mind subtitles, it's well worth a look.

But I'm A Cheerleader. Cheerleader with suspected lesbian tendencies is sent to "reorientation" camp where she falls in love with another girl. Both funny and touching.

Now I'd love to hear your suggestions!

Oh, I wish I could remember some of them. LOGO (the gay and lesbian channel) has a lot of good movies on it...and show (Wonderfalls, whoooo! =D) and I catch a lot of them, but I tend to forget after a while =\

I always liked Boys Don't Cry. And hmmm...does Dog Day Afternoon count? That was a good one too.

Y'know what, I think I've seen "But I'm a Cheerleader". Just part of it, but it was driving me crazy trying to remember what movie it was where a girl was sent off to turn her straight or whatever. So thanks <!--s51-->:3<!--/s51-->

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

Angels in America.

The made-for-tv movie was pretty good, but the play (both Millennium Approaches and Perestroika) are incredible.

There are a few I like and have seen more than once: Better than Chocolate, When Night is falling, French Twist (in french I think the title was Gauzon Maudit), Long Time Companion, Entre Nous, But I'm a Cheerleader. Oh and then Queer as Folk and the L Word my favorite gay themed shows.

I'll have to keep an eye out for "But I'm a Cheerleader". It sounds like a really good flick! I enjoy "Queer as Folk" and "The L Word". My SIL is a lesbian, so she often comments on movies/shows that she has seen and liked. I'll have to make sure she has seen the two you spoke of.

I can't say that I could think of any but...er...The Rocky Horror Picture Show is probably the closest thing to a gay themed movie I could think of that I've seen.

OMG THAT MOVIE IS FUCKING WIN!

Oh I just remembered: To Wong Foo: Thanks for everything, Julie Numar.

That movie is one of the finest piece of cinema ever created.

I am a big fan of The Birdcage, but The Producers has a gay character that made me laugh like crazy.

Not Nathan Lane's character right? He was gay in the Birdcage but not in Producers...and suprisingly not IRL either.

I was going to add my two cents with the movie Urbania and the play Angels in America, but I'm partial as my cousin starred in both of them. Smile

I used to watch that channel a lot because my gay friend god me hooked on this one show (I forget the name). Some of the movies on that channel aren't too bad.

A Home at the End of the World (I think that was the name) wasn't a bad movie.

That Certain Summer with Hal Holbrook and Martin Sheen it was on the ABC movie of the week and my mother banned us from watching it the first time it televised. She must have though it would have changed us.

Not being gay, I generally don't watch shows that have those themes. However, I understand Broke Back Mountain was good. I haven' watched it yet. Just not one of the movies on my list at the moment.

You don't have to be gay to watch a gay-themed movie. Just like how you don't have to be a man to identify with a male character or similar with a female. Fiction is called fiction for a reason.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

I would have to say that I really enjoyed Brokeback Mountain. Now the funniest one would have to have been The Birdcage. I love Robin Williams in that movie.

Personally, I hated Brokeback Mountain. The accents were embarrassing, the acting horrible, and the relationship did not intrigue me at all.

As for other movies with a GLB theme, I liked "About Adam". The character's bisexuality is just part of him, not the entire focus of the movie. It's a funny, interesting film.

I saw Hal Sparks on Queer As Folk and never look at him the same on Vh1 I love the (whatevers)... is he really gay or just acts the role? Because I know 2 guys that look like him and I giggle every time I see them.

What about "Kissing Jessica Stein"? I've always liked that movie, although it is more like an exploration of sexuality than a gay-themed movie, per se.
