80's cell animation! Old Wed Apr 4, 2007 11:33:01 AM #36326 Perm Link
Anone remember the original He-Man??

If you ever get a chance to watch it, do so, if only to laugh at the recycled backgrounds, character cells, animation and dialogue... it's bad, but in the best possible way. It was a shame it was run purely to peddle the toys (as opposed to tell a story), but that lack of care makes it as amusing at it is.

I love it how everywhere on Eternia looks almost identical, and Adam's transformation to He-Man is just a cue to run the into loop, and Skeletor's constant hands-on-hips cackle... classic.

If you want a laugh, check out the some funnt vids on You Tube, or Skeletor and Gang: http://www.multi.fi/~pleppo/SA/SAG.htm

Yeah, but in a totally new style. The new series is actually VERY funny, and takes the piss out of itself a lot, which makes it great viewing. Someone should make a 'Sealab' type random comedy based on the old cell series. There are some on Youtube, and some very good ones at that.

If anyone likes Heman, check out Skeletor And Gang (type it into Google)... hilarious!

HeMan was really before my time, unfortunately, because it does look hilarious. A lot of older (and unfortunately, some recent!) cartoons reuse backgrounds, stick to a certain amount of cels for budgetary reasons. Animation is still pretty expensive, but made easier with the use of computers (for 2D animation as well as 3D), but in the HeMan days it was way too expensive to have a wide variety of backgrounds or movements. Still, they're quite charming in their own way.

That was often the problem with cartoons made by companies who mass produced them. Look at Hanna-Barbera, they had a ton of cartoons that all look and sounded the same and some of the laziest animation ever. A lot of the characters inexplicably wore ties or shirt collars (even if they didn't wear shirts...) so they could make the head on a separate cel, since that's much cheaper because you don't have to redraw the body with every mouth movement.

P.S. It's spelled 'cel', short for celluloid whereas a 'cell' refers to the smallest unit of a living being and thus, by extension, the smallest unit of whatever you apply the word to. Just so you know :3

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

It's classic stuff, and very sexually obscure... all the heroes with simply clothing and chiselled torso's running around... and Adam of Eternia's pink frilly costume... his Man-At-Arms.... ooooh errrrrr.

She-Ra was equally as rubbish, and a blatant tie-in to get girls into the toys.

Not too long after, I never ran across it. Keep in mind, it's unlikely that I'd watch TV beyond Barney until I was 3 or so. The only cartoon I remember watching when I was very very little was Bump in the Night.

Huh? Signature? What's going on with that signature?

He-Man was great...but at my house it was She-Ra. What's so funny about it now is how incredibly cheesy it seems. I suppose to our childish eyes it was cool at the time...but it's just funny now.

And yes, we had ALL the She-Ra junk.

I remember the old He-Man. I have not seen any of the new ones someone said was out now. Thanks for the link I will have to check it out.
Actually I liked the old Hanna Barbara cartoons myself. Yes they weren't great animation wise but they were funny, I thought.

If I remember correctly, She-Ra and He-Man were brother and sister. Does anyone know? There were a few times when they crossed over to each others shows.

You know I cannot remember for sure if they were brother and sister. I know my husband just told me when I asked him that they were. Curious to know for sure now.
