Subs vs. Dubs Old Fri Sep 15, 2006 7:39:25 PM #24038 Perm Link
I personally like dubs better because I don't have to read while I'm watching a show...

How about you?

It depends. Subs can't get across emotion and can destroy a movie (see Ghost in the Shell 2), but a bad dub can completely ruin the experience (see Sonic X).

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

Yeah, I missed the English Naruto episode so I tried watching the subbed version on Youtube...

That's why I don't watch subs. That japanese voice stuff. Give me ENGLISH.

I prefer subs but then again, I can actually understand some of the japanese without it. Most english dubs suck to me but everyone usually has one they prefer over the other. If the dub is done correctly, I have no problem watching it.

I'm with Aron on this one...

DUBS! I really don't want to read the screen while watching the action.

That being the case, I will watch a sub if there is no dub.

I do. I don't want to listen to some weird accented Japanese language.

I prefer subs by a long shot. I have yet to watched a dubbed movie where I have thought "wow, I really liked the voice actors in that one." With dubs you miss out on a lot of the original acting and emotion that goes into the production in return for something that is easily digested and a little skewed.

Also, japan spends a lot more money into anime, thus having a MUCH wider selection for voice actors and actually finding someone who fits the job. Here, we have shitty voice acting and a much paler budget in compairison. Even still, in english you are changing the way the anime is suppose to be. The english voice acting may say things correctly, but the tone may be different and you'll get a whole different feel for the anime. My favorite example .... Inuyasha. Putting aside that many people either hate it or love it and JUST looking at the voice acting part, Kagaome in english is seen as a bossy and whinny (sp?), in japanese its a tad different, she is a little softer, a little more easy going and a little bit more compasionate, although still whinny. My point is you should watch something in the way its suppose to be watched ... not something handed down and redone. Meh, can think of an example that would prove my point but oh well.

Yes this may be true for a first timer watching a different language, but once you watch it enough you learn to pick out the emotions.
