Perhaps you've heard of BTX already, but how many of us have seen or used it? BTX is more than just another form factor. BTX hopes to make computers smaller and quieter by changing the component layout on the motherboard. This article will serve as a primer for BTX as it stands today.

One other item of interest about the BTX standard is the careful thought that went into the different size motherboard form factors. Each larger form factor simply adds real-estate for additional slots. The base motherboard configuration of where the CPU, Memory and Power are located remains a constant. This makes overall chasis design and thermal management much easier.

1. ATX will slowly be phased out just as AT did when ATX came out.

2. Each of the components are rotated to provide maximum airflow.
