Updated Bios Now... Old Mon Aug 23, 2010 7:04:58 PM #132253 Perm Link
I installed the latest BIOS update for my motherboard because I was trying anything I could think of to fix a graphics freeze in rfactor. I used the live update that MSI has because I've never done a BIOS upgrade any other way. After I installed the update, I rebooted and everything seemed fine until the next day when I booted my computer and it stalled at the motherboard logo where I have the option to enter the bios. It never goes any further. I can hit the reset button on my computer to reboot and it will boot up. This is now the procedure I have to take to boot my computer since the update. I have went into the bios to reset to default but no change. I've never had this happen therefore I don't know how to fix it. Sometimes when I reboot from the button on the computer, I'll get a message something like "DQS training failed on previous boot revert to slower DRAM speed"

I hope someone can help me because I've googled this and found no answers to my specific problem.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
MSI K9N SLI-F V.2
4 GB DDR2 G.SKILL
2 eVGA GeForce 7800 GT 256 MB

hey Jafo,

First check your RAM timings and VOLTAGE! If the ram is running either too low or too high of voltage, this could cause the issue you are describing.

I have everything at default right now.

Why would something have changed with the bios update?

I didn't have any issues with booting until the bios update.

I'm not sure what the voltage should be. I'm not an overclocker, so I never looked into what memory voltage should or shouldn't be.

Here's my exact motherboard and memory.

BIOS updates MAY change settings. You should always go back and make sure everything is correct after an update. Put set to defaults and see if that works.

I set everything to default with same results. I then went back and set my memory settings the way they were before the update and it's still acting nuts. I removed the cmos battery hoping that would help but no help there. I wish I could go back to the previous bios version.

Before going to bed last night, I created a recovery floppy for flashing the bios. I ran the bios flash and it installed but on the first boot after flashing I got a message that said "CMOS Checksum Bad". It only did it on the first boot after flashing and I still have the previous problem with it not completing the boot on the first try.

CMOS checksum bad means that the battery was pulled or the settings were garbled. It'll load defaults on that boot and expect you to fix them.

This is a very strange problem. Perhaps the motherboard is hanging on a component startup? Try pulling the drives to see if this cold boot problem goes away.

Do you still get that RAM warning?

Like the CMOS message, it only happened the boot after the flash. I think the memory message may have been because I had memory settings changed (to the settings stated by the memory) when I flashed the first time. I had them at default the second time I flashed.

Tonight I'm going to try to flash to a previous version of the bios to see if that fixes the boot problem.

Also, as troubleshooting, I used my Windows 7 disc to try fixing the bootloader in case it somehow got corrupt but that didn't fix it. I also from within Windows ran the sfc /scannow command but it didn't find anything to fix.

One question I have before I try flashing tonight, do I need a Windows XP boot disc or will creating a Windows 7 boot disc work?

Any ideas or suggestions before I attempt to flash is welcome and appreciated.

Try the older version and see if that helps...

It is tough to diagnose these types of problems.
